Elora Khanom won season 8 of The Great Canadian Baking Show in November 2024 with one of the best origin stories the tent has heard. The 42-year-old Edmonton baker immigrated to Canada from Bangladesh in 2004, taught herself to bake with books borrowed from the library, and got serious in 2009 when her three-year-old son was diagnosed with diabetes and she was determined he would not miss out on his favorite treat: donuts. Fifteen years later she was holding the cake stand.

Khanom, an e-commerce process assistant by day, took the title in the November 24, 2024 finale, with Jen Childs of Esquimalt and Pamela Kramer of Stayner as runners-up. CBC's winner coverage highlighted the style that carried her: saffron as a signature spice, a fearless hand with chilies, and Bangladeshi flavors folded into classic bakes, summed up in their headline as "saffron, sparkles and savoury delights." She had also, by her own cheerful admission, been training for the tent since 2019, which makes her one of the show's most deliberate champions. She is the eighth name in the complete winners list.

A win that traveled

Khanom's victory resonated beyond Canada. Bangladeshi media, including The Business Standard, covered her as a national point of pride, the baker who "won over Canada, one dessert at a time." At home she made the usual champion's rounds, including an interview on the Baking Scraps podcast alongside her fellow finalists.

Where things stand now

As of this writing, Khanom's post-win footprint is still taking shape, which is normal for a champion this recent. The public record shows the podcast and press appearances around her win and an active Instagram presence, but no announced bakery, cookbook, or television project. Given that she spent five years preparing for the tent, it would not surprise anyone if the next chapter is similarly well planned; it just is not publicly documented yet.
