About Kids Baking Championship

Food Network's youngest bracket puts genuinely skilled young bakers through scaled-down championship challenges, with the hosts doing as much coaching as judging. The tone is the whole point: critiques are honest but kind, eliminations come with encouragement, and the bakes are regularly better than anything an adult viewer could manage. It is the rare kids' competition that takes the baking completely seriously.

The format

Young bakers face themed challenges each week, with the hosts judging on taste, presentation, and technique and one baker eliminated per episode until a champion is crowned. The winner takes home $25,000 in most seasons.

The prize

$25,000 in most seasons ($10,000 plus a kitchen remodel in season 1)

Complete season breakdown

Every episode and bake

The first season compresses the competition into four episodes, with one elimination bake in each installment. The briefs move from a two-item bake sale and savory-looking dessert imposters to sweet-and-savory choux puffs and a layered celebration-cake finale. This guide records all four challenges and includes one original home adaptation inspired by the bake-sale twist.

  1. Episode 1 · Signature bake-sale goods

    Bake Sale

Two signature items must be finished on a short clock before a peanut-butter-and-jelly requirement turns the opening bake into a three-part test.

    • Challenge

Two signature bake-sale items with a peanut-butter-and-jelly addition

Make two different signature baked goods suitable for a bake sale in two hours, then add a separate peanut-butter-and-jelly bake when the mid-challenge twist is announced.

  2. Episode 2 · Sweet food illusions

    Dessert Imposters

Each baker disguises a sweet bake as an assigned savory dish, then extends the illusion with a second component served alongside it.

    • Challenge

Assigned savory-dish dessert imposter with a sidekick

In two hours, make a sweet dessert that convincingly resembles the assigned bagel, sushi, pizza, taco, burger, or spaghetti dish, then add a separate sweet sidekick that fits the presentation.

  3. Episode 3 · Sweet and savory choux pastry

    Stuffed Puffs

Pate a choux provides the common dough for two dozen filled pastries split evenly between dessert and savory flavors.

    • Challenge

One dozen sweet and one dozen savory stuffed puffs

Make 24 filled pate a choux puffs in 90 minutes; after beginning with a sweet-puff brief, respond to the twist by producing 12 sweet puffs and 12 savory puffs.

  4. Episode 4 · Championship celebration cakes

    Celebration Cake

The finalists imagine their own winning celebrations through tall layered cakes and finish with an additional edible party favor.

    • Final challenge

Layered celebration cake with an edible party favor

Create a celebration cake of at least three layers in three hours, decorated for the moment of winning the championship, and add a separate edible party favor such as a cookie, lemon bar, shortbread, or cake in a jar.

Complete season breakdown

Every episode and bake

Season two expands to eight weekly elimination bakes. The complete run covers pie and ice cream, decorated eclairs, chile-spiked chocolate, stacked macarons, lunchbox ingredients, candy, dinner-reversal imposters, and a spring-break cake finale. One original home adaptation draws on the hot-chocolate challenge.

  1. Episode 1 · Elevated pie and ice cream

    Pie a La Mode

A polished pie anchors the season opener, while homemade ice cream turns the finished plate into pie a la mode.

    • Challenge

Elevated pie with homemade ice cream

Bake a classic pie elevated through flavor, finish, or presentation, then make a complementary ice cream from scratch to serve with it.

  2. Episode 2 · Decorated choux pastry

    Eclairs Gone Wild

Colorful eclairs test consistency and filling before animal-shaped cream puffs add a small sculptural choux assignment.

    • Challenge

Twelve decorated eclairs and four animal cream puffs

Make 12 eclairs with bold flavor and decoration, then use pate a choux to create four filled cream puffs shaped like a favorite animal.

  3. Episode 3 · Chocolate with chile heat

    'Hot' Chocolate

Chocolate remains the leading flavor while chile, cayenne, hot sauce, or another source of heat must be balanced rather than overwhelming.

    • Challenge

Chocolate dessert with a hot ingredient

Create a chocolate-forward dessert and incorporate chile, pepper, cayenne, hot sauce, or another hot spice so its flavor is clear but the heat stays balanced.

  4. Episode 4 · Macaron towers

    Macaron Stackaron

A large batch of colorful French macarons must succeed as individual pastries and as a freestanding stacked display.

    • Challenge

Three dozen macarons in a five-inch stack

Produce 36 French macarons in at least two colors, fill and finish them consistently, and stack the display to a minimum height of five inches.

  5. Episode 5 · Lunchbox ingredient transformations

    Lunch Box Desserts

Every dessert begins with the contents of an assigned lunchbox, and a late addition of carrot sticks or banana chips must be worked into the plate.

    • Challenge

Dessert made from assigned lunchbox foods

Transform the foods in an assigned lunchbox into a coherent dessert, with ingredient trading allowed, then incorporate the additional carrot sticks or banana chips introduced during the bake.

  6. Episode 6 · Candy and torch work

    Candymonium

Three candies must read as deliberate dessert ingredients rather than excess decoration, followed by a meaningful use of a kitchen torch.

    • Challenge

Balanced three-candy dessert with a torched element

Create one dessert featuring three different types of candy without making it overly sweet, then use a blowtorch on a component where caramelizing or browning improves the finished dessert.

  7. Episode 7 · Dinner and dessert in reverse

    Dessert Impostors 2.0

The returning imposter brief pairs a sweet dish disguised as savory food with an actual savory cupcake, reversing the expected dinner order twice.

    • Challenge

Savory-looking dessert imposter and savory cupcake

Make a sweet dessert that convincingly resembles an assigned savory dish, then add a cupcake whose cake, filling, frosting, and garnish are genuinely savory.

  8. Episode 8 · Spring-break destinations

    Spring Break Cakes

The finalists translate beach, amusement-park, or camping imagery into a finished cake and must fit a freshly made curd into the flavor plan.

    • Final challenge

Assigned spring-break destination cake with curd

Create a cake themed to the assigned beach, amusement park, or camping destination, then make and incorporate a curd filling that complements the cake.

  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 175 C, or 160 C fan. Line a 20 cm square pan with baking paper.
  2. Melt the butter and dark chocolate together over barely simmering water, stirring until smooth. Set aside for five minutes.

The cayenne should arrive after the chocolate rather than dominate it; reduce it to 1/8 teaspoon for a milder batch.

Frozen raspberries can be used without thawing, but add two minutes to the bake time.

Every episode and bake

Season three runs for ten episodes, each built around one large elimination bake with a mid-challenge addition. Carnival cupcakes lead into volcano cakes, food illusions, tie-dye cakes, throwback eclairs, breakfast layer cakes, app cookies, pet desserts, molecular techniques, and a superhero finale. The season opens with cupcakes designed around carnival atmosphere and the flavors of familiar fairground treats.

    • Challenge

Carnival-themed cupcakes with an assigned fair treat

  3. Episode 3 · Comfort-food illusions

Make a sweet imposter of the assigned meatloaf, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich, chili, roast beef sandwich, hot dog, meatball sub, grilled cheese, or burrito, then add sweet chips and salsa as a side.

  4. Episode 4 · Tie-dye cake and swirled ice cream

The colors and flavor divisions of a 1960s-inspired tie-dye cake are paired with a separate homemade ice cream carrying a visible swirl.

    • Challenge

Tie-dye cake with swirled ice cream

Create a decorated tie-dye cake whose interior shows multiple psychedelic colors, then make a complementary ice cream with a visible flavor swirl.

  5. Episode 5 · Updated classic desserts

    Throwback Eclairs

    • Challenge

      Old-school-dessert eclairs with dried fruit

Turn an assigned coconut cream pie, Black Forest cake, German chocolate cake, chocolate pecan pie, pineapple upside-down cake, cherry cheesecake, banana cream pie, or apple pie into a decorated eclair, then incorporate dried fruit.

  6. Episode 6 · Pancake and waffle layer cakes

    Breakfast Desserts

Two teams turn breakfast staples into stacked layer cakes, and a cereal addition must reinforce rather than distract from the chosen pancake or waffle base.

    • Team challenge

Pancake or waffle layer cake with breakfast cereal

As a member of the assigned pancake or waffle team, construct a layer cake from that breakfast item and incorporate breakfast cereal when it is introduced as the twist; the winning team earns immunity.

  7. Episode 7 · Sugar-cookie app icons

    Mobile App Cookies

A dozen decorated cookies visualize fictional mobile apps, while citrus must be carried through the flavor and each app needs an intelligible purpose.

    • Challenge

      Twelve citrus-flavored mobile-app sugar cookies

Bake and decorate 12 sugar cookies in 90 minutes as icons for assigned fictional mobile apps, explain what each represented app does, and use citrus in the cookies or their finish.

  8. Episode 8 · Pet-inspired desserts

    Pet Shop Joys

A live-animal pairing inspires either the form or story of a dessert before a second edible companion expands the pet-shop scene.

    • Challenge

Assigned-pet dessert with an edible friend

Create a dessert visibly or narratively inspired by an assigned rabbit, turtle, Silkie chicken, guinea pig, or mini pig, then add a separate edible friend for that pet.

  9. Episode 9 · Modernist dessert techniques

    Molecular Kidstronomy

The semifinal combines at least two modernist techniques with deliberately old-fashioned hand-whipped cream.

    • Semifinal challenge

Dessert using two molecular techniques and hand-whipped cream

In 90 minutes, create a dessert using at least two provided modernist methods such as smoke infusion, immersion circulation, spherification, or maltodextrin powder, then hand-whip cream with an antique-style metal whisk.

  10. Episode 10 · Original superhero cakes

    Superhero Grand Finale

Each finalist develops an original hero through a themed cake and completes the story with a distinct edible villain.

    • Final challenge

Original superhero cake with an edible supervillain

Use five hours to create a cake based on an original superhero, explain the character and powers during tasting, and add a separate edible supervillain to complete the story.

Ingredients

  • 240 g all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 170 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 180 g granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 120 ml whole milk, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Finely grated zest of 1 orange
  • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 tablespoon raspberry jam, strained
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Yellow and red gel food coloring
  • 225 g full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 75 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 180 g icing sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 175 C, or 160 C fan. Grease and line a deep 20 cm round cake pan.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Beat the butter and granulated sugar for three minutes until pale. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the milk, vanilla, and orange zest.
  4. Fold in the dry ingredients just until smooth. Divide the batter evenly among three bowls.
  5. Tint the first portion yellow and stir in the lemon zest. Tint the second pink with red gel and stir in the raspberry jam. Stir the cocoa into the third portion.
  6. Drop alternating spoonfuls of the three batters into the pan. Draw a skewer through the batter twice in a loose S shape; do not overmix the colors.
  7. Bake for 31 to 36 minutes, until the center springs back and a tester comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then turn onto a rack to cool completely.
  8. Beat the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add the icing sugar in two additions, then beat in the lemon juice.
  9. Spread the frosting over the top of the cooled cake in broad swirls, leaving the sides visible.

This is an original Baking Show Guide home adaptation inspired by the episode brief. It is not a contestant recipe and not an official Food Network recipe.

Use gel rather than liquid coloring so the batter consistency stays even across all three portions.

Two passes with the skewer are enough; extra swirling will muddy the tie-dye pattern.

Ingredients

  • 190 g all-purpose flour, divided
  • 45 g icing sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt, divided
  • 115 g cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 100 g fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs, at room temperature

  • 150 ml fresh lemon juice
  • Finely grated zest of 2 lemons
  • Icing sugar, for finishing

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 175 C, or 160 C fan. Line a 20 cm square pan with baking paper.
  2. Combine 150 g flour, the icing sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Rub in the cold butter until the mixture forms coarse crumbs, then press it firmly into the pan.
  3. Bake the base for 16 to 18 minutes, until pale gold at the edges.
  4. Meanwhile, cook the blueberries with 1 tablespoon granulated sugar over medium heat for four minutes. Crush the berries, then simmer until the mixture is thick enough to hold a trail from the spoon.

  6. Pour the lemon mixture over the hot crust. Spoon narrow lines of blueberry mixture across the top and drag a skewer through them once to make a loose ripple.
  7. Return the pan to the oven for 21 to 25 minutes, until the edges are set and the center has only a slight wobble.
  8. Cool completely, then chill for at least two hours. Dust lightly with icing sugar and cut into 16 bars.

This is an original Baking Show Guide home adaptation inspired by the episode brief. It is not a contestant recipe and not an official Food Network recipe.

Keep the blueberry layer sparse so lemon remains the primary flavor.
